What is a Receipt?
A receipt, also called proof of payment, is precisely proof that payment for a service or merchandise delivered has been received or paid. When a company sells articles or offers services to another company or to a consumer, the one who makes the delivery is obliged to keep the proof of the operation by means of an invoice or other type of proof (Regulation by which the invoicing obligations are regulated , art. 1), group where payment receipts would be included. In other words, the client has the right to demand proof of payment from the service provider or product supplier.
In practice, its use is more frequent when payments are made in cash, but in the case of bank transfers, clients can also receive proof of operations. With what purpose?
How is the Receipt Different from the Invoice?
With a receipt, the client has in his hands a document that attests that he has fulfilled his commercial obligation, that is, to cancel a debt for a service or a merchandise, and the provider has proof that he has received his compensation. This proof of payment does not serve, however, as a tax receipt, since it is necessary for the service provider to issue an invoice.
The invoice differs from the receipt basically because of the moment it is issued and the purpose for which it is made. A receipt is a merely informative document that proves a payment made and is always issued after payment, and an invoice is a document for tax purposes that certifies that a commercial operation has been carried out and is usually issued before payment is made. In this sense, it is more like a request for payment than a proof of it. By serving as proof of tax obligations, the invoice is somewhat more complex and includes more data (invoice number, date, supplier’s tax data) and shows the detailed taxes for each product.
There are Different Types of Receipt Depending on their Purpose:
Deposit box receipt: Receipt of an amount owed in cash.
Cash out receipt: Cash outlay for the purchase of goods.
Rent receipt: Payment of a monthly rent per lease.
Receipt of deposit in a checking account: Receipt of an amount for a bank transaction.
Receipt of judicial deposit: Deposit in a bank by court order.
Receipt of security deposits: Payment of a rental deposit.
Receipt of deposits in custody: Issued by the bank when it receives valuables that it must safeguard for an agreed period of time.
Fixed-term deposit receipt: Also issued by the bank when a fixed-term deposit is contracted.
Since the reform of the billing system that introduced the Regulation that regulates billing obligations in 2013, a regulation that had the intention of transposing Directive 2010/45 / EU into the national legal system in order to normalize the use of electronic invoices, receipts can be replaced by so-called simplified invoices. These invoices do not contain all the data that an ordinary invoice, such as the receiver’s tax data, but they have tax validity.
